Daryl  Collins

In high school, Daryl took a machine shop class for kicks and fell in love with it.  His first job at 16 was in a machine shop making aftermarket motorcycle parts.  He was lucky to work with Byron Hines of Vance & Hines Racing, during their early Suzuki years.  Looking back, Daryl believes he owes a lot to Byron, because working with him helped shape many of his early career decisions, and contributed to what Daryl is today.

Daryl’s background also includes drag racing from back in the late ‘70s-early ‘80s with a 10-second Chevy II wagon.  OCIR will always live in his heart!

In the late ‘80s he moved into precision tooling, which he soon discovered a natural talent for, so he took the next logical step and moved into the aerospace industry where he has been ever since.

In April of 2005 Daryl received a complimentary ticket for Irwindale Speedway from a friend.  It was the first time he saw a Legend car.  He was immediately intrigued and hooked.

Looking for a new challenge, he sponsored a Legend car during the 2005 and 2006 seasons.   In 2007 he decided to sponsor Matt Hart (#92 driver) and his wrench, Devin Hugie, to see if they could penetrate the top 10 at Irwindale – they finished 8th.  At about the same time he met Darryl Wong and after several conversations, and a handshake later, Daryl became Speed Wong Racing’s crew chief for the Legends program – and what a wild ride it has been!

When asked what the 2009 season holds for him, Daryl says, “It’s been quite challenging and a definite learning experience running a program this big, but I can’t wait for the 2009 season!”

Jeff  Hensley
Jeff grew up around all types of motorsports and remembers as a small boy running on the sand behind the pits, at Long Beach Marine Stadium, trying to keep up with the drag boats as they roared by. His family spent a lot of time camping in the desert, riding and driving anything with a throttle. They also spent time at the now long-gone Riverside, Ontario and Orange County speedways. He discovered his mechanical talent at an early age when he began taking apart, and rebuilding neighborhood bikes, then moving on to cars when he got older. After he graduated high school, he honed his skills by working at a small, performance-oriented repair shop, and attending Cerritos College to study automotive technology to obtain ASE certification in several areas. He has always been involved one way or another with performance, show, or plain old beater vehicles of every type. When away from his wrenches, he enjoys being outdoors: Camping, hunting, fishing, mountain biking, snowboarding and spending time with his girlfriend, Veronica Lopez, and their spoiled mutts.
